Building Temporal Architecture on Transaction Logs

Abstract

Conventional databases are related to the relational paradigm and store current valid data. It means that any change operation replaces original state. History cannot be directly obtained, however, transaction logs and internal change vectors can offer the ability to construct states, as they existed in the past. Flashback technology introduced in Oracle database is primarily intended for security, reliability, consistency, and recovery. The process of obtaining historical images can be strongly resource demanding. Our proposed solution enhances transaction logs by indexing them, delimited by the data pointers. Thanks to that, processing time and costs can be significantly reduced. Users deal only with conventional layer, historical data are automatically available through the effective log handling.
